Smoke Outlook

Air quality is forecast to remain in the Good to Moderate air quality category across the state, although short term readings will be higher in the Clearwater drainages and across the Idaho Panhandle from Benewah County north.  Conditions have improved across the state in comparison to yesterday’s data.  Currently there are no Air Quality Alerts issued by DEQ.

Northern Idaho is under an upper level ridge pattern today with stagnant atmospheric conditions.  This will limit regional impacts but also serve to heighten the impacts of local, low-level smoke already entrained within the area.  It is unlikely to lift much today as the ridge persists through this afternoon before late night thunderstorms develop and carry through into tomorrow with the passage of a weak cold front. Thursday looks to be a favorable day to mix smoke out of the region via rain scouring and convective lift associated with afternoon thunderstorms.  Southern Idaho will be influenced with scattered, wet thunderstorms that will develop across much of the Snake River Plain this afternoon, particularly across the Southern and Southeast Highlands.  Surface winds will be from the northwest-northeast across the Snake River Plain at 5-10 mph today.  Near thunderstorms, expect wind gusts up to 30 mph with erratic wind directions.  Similar conditions are expected through Thursday as fire activity will decrease with higher humidity values and increased cloud cover.

The strongest smoke impacts are occurring across the Idaho Panhandle and through the Hells Canyon and Clearwater drainages.  This will continue in the afternoon and evening today the upper level ridge limits dispersion and movement in central and northern Idaho.  Light impacts will also occur in the Lower Snake and Southern Highlands as smoke from fires burning in the Salmon River Mountains and Oregon drift into the region. Burnout operations are likely to take place on the Corner Creek Fire which may send increased amounts of smoke into the Lower and Upper Treasure Valley.

Air quality is forecast to remain in the Good to Moderate air quality category across the state, although short term readings will be higher in the Clearwater drainages and across the Idaho Panhandle from Benewah County north.  Conditions have improved across the state in comparison to yesterday’s data.  Currently there are no Air Quality Alerts issued by DEQ.

Northern Idaho is under a zonal (west-east) flow pattern aloft and will remain that way through the afternoon as an upper level trough and associated surface cold front arrive early Wednesday.  This upper level system will send minor disturbances our way across the state allowing for scattered thunderstorms to develop across the Panhandle.  This afternoon, surface winds will wrap around to be from the north-northwest at 2-8 mph while north of I-90, winds will contain a strong easterly flow component.  Southern Idaho is under a convergence zone aloft as an upper level low off the California Coast stalls and funnels monsoon moisture into the Snake River Plain.  Scattered, wet thunderstorms will develop across much of the Snake River Plain this afternoon across the southern section and into the Southern and Southeast Highlands.  Surface winds will be from the northwest across the Snake River Plain at 5-10 mph today.  Near thunderstorms, expect wind gusts up to 30 mph with erratic wind directions.  Similar conditions are expected through Wednesday as fire activity will decrease with higher humidity values and increased cloud cover.

Moderate smoke impacts are occurring across the Idaho Panhandle and through the Hells Canyon and Clearwater drainages.  This will continue in the afternoon and evening today as this smoke will track to the west this morning before turning to the east once more.  Light impacts will also occur in the Lower Snake and western Magic Valleys as smoke from fires burning in the Salmon River Mountains settles in overnight tonight.

Northern Idaho is under a zonal (west-east) flow pattern aloft and will remain that way through tomorrow as an upper level trough and associated surface cold front arrive early Wednesday.  At the surface, diurnal wind patterns are currently driving local winds with a generally east-northeast wind at 5-10 mph.  This afternoon, these winds will wrap around to be from the north-northeast at 2-8 mph generally north of the Latah and Clearwater County lines.  South of this boundary, winds will become northwest at 5-10 mph.  This pattern will bring any surface smoke from eastern Washington back into Idaho this afternoon and evening. Smoke Outlook

Air quality is forecast to remain in the Good to Moderate air quality category through the weekend.

Aloft, Idaho is currently under an upper level ridge pattern which will continue into this weekend.  This will continue to promote warm temperatures and light surface winds.  By Saturday, the ridge will flatten as an upper level low pressure system approaches the southern California coast.  This will allow monsoon moisture to enter our air sheds.  We will see slightly cooler temperatures (but still above normal), with winds at the surface from 5-15mph and a chance for afternoon thunderstorms over the higher elevation regions.  The increased moisture content of the atmosphere over this time may also provide for a few more clouds in the sky.

Light haze and associated impacts can be expected across most of the state of Idaho ranging from the Clearwater Basin and north into the Idaho Panhandle through Monday.  Furthermore, night time drainage smoke from that region may also impact the Treasure Valley Friday morning, while once the weekend hits, this smoke will drain into the Upper Snake on Saturday morning.  Regional smoke impacts will also be evident as fires continue to burn in Central Washington, central Oregon, and southern California.

Smoke Outlook

DEQ has started issuing smoke forecasts due to increased wildfire activity and degraded air quality throughout the state. Air quality is forecast to remain in the Good to Moderate air quality category for at least the next couple of days.

Over the past few days there have been several wildfires with relatively local smoke impacts across the state.  Light haze and associated impacts can be expected across most of the state of Idaho ranging from the Clearwater Basin and north into the Idaho Panhandle.  Furthermore, night time drainage smoke from that region may also impact the Treasure Valley Tuesday morning.  Regional smoke impacts will also be evident as fires continue to burn south of Kennewick and Walla Walla in Washington as well as central Oregon and southern California.

The fire potential is expected to remain elevated over southwest Idaho and the west-central Mountains.  Dry conditions can lead to fire and fire-related accidents.  Please exercise safety and precautions around fire.

Know before you burn-understand the Federal, state, tribal, and local open burning requirements and restriction that apply.  Burn bans are currently in effect in many areas and may include firework prohibitions.

Wildfire forecast will remain valid through above date unless conditions become unrepresentative.
