The large high pressure system over the Great Basin that has dominated the weather pattern for the past week will briefly break down today as a shortwave trough skirts Idaho and pushes through a weak cold front this morning. While this will help to keep the air mostly clear in the northern half of the state, southwest winds aloft will remain in southern Idaho drawing in smoke from numerous large wildfires in northern California. Expect widespread haze and smoke through the day.
With the cooler air mass and west-northwest winds at the surface behind the front, much of this smoke will remain aloft during the day but may transfer down to the surface overnight. By Friday afternoon, the ridge will build back into Idaho helping to funnel even more smoke into the state from California fires.
Bottom line: smoke and haze are here and don't look to be going anywhere for a few days at least. Stay safe everyone!!
