FIRE,
WEATHER AND SMOKE SYNOPSIS
Weather: An
upper-level trough has deepened over the Pacific northwest, weakening the
pressure gradient in the low levels, which will weaken the winds significantly
below ridge tops. With a trough axis
approaching, transport winds will be west to west-southwest this afternoon
with speeds of 10 – 15 mph. Up-canyon winds will be around 4 – 8 mph
after 1:00pm while ridge winds will be a 8 -12 mph with gusts to 15 mph after
exposed ridges; these winds will shift between southwesterly to northwesterly
throughout the day. Strongest winds in
west-to-east oriented valleys.
Inversion will break between noon and 1pm. Increased cloud cover will be seen for much
of the day in the area.
Fire Activity: Yesterday, the fire grew only 323 acres putting the
current interpreted size to 180,300 acres.
Higher RH values and increased cloud cover will help lower fire activity
today. Rising dew point temperatures
this afternoon will increase surface RH values. The most active fire activity will be seen
north of HWY 17 and HWY 21 in the Clear Creek, Deadwood, and Bear Valley
drainages. Grass and shrub fuels will be active for uphill runs in valley
locations. Wind/slope alignment will
result in moderate to high spread rates.
Tomorrow, an increase in
moisture and a good chance of showers in the late morning and afternoon will
continue to decrease fire activity.
Smoke Summary: Smoke will
concentrate in the low valleys this morning and slowly mix down to the
surface for much of the day. Increased
cloud cover will decrease the chances of clearing out this afternoon, but
could see some lightening late this afternoon as mixing peaks. Smoke will begin to settle into the valleys
this evening, with the biggest impacts for areas northeast, east, and
directly south of the fire. Today, the most significant smoke impacts will be
to Lowman, Stanley, and Garden Valley. Elevated smoke plumes from the Pioneer and
adjacent fires will affect Salmon and
Challis areas today and this
evening.
