Smoky in the Panhandle tonight, clearing tomorrow

Air quality forecasts for today are in the Good to Moderate Category with Salmon in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Category.

Monsoon moisture will continue to enter the southern portion of the state today and Saturday. These storms will continue to develop throughout the day primarily over the Southern Highlands and enter the Middle Snake River Plain. There will be a chance for showers over the elevated terrain of the Central Mountains and the Southeast Highlands this afternoon. Elsewhere, surface winds will be between 5-10 mph from the southwest to northwest with southeast winds within the western Magic Valley and Treasure Valley.

Tomorrow will see a chance for showers over southern Idaho, excluding the western Magic Valley and Treasure Valley. Surface wind speeds will be from the southwest to northwest from 5-15 mph with gusts of 15-25 mph in eastern Idaho. On Sunday and into Monday, a ridge pattern will begin to build and clear out any precipitation over the state. Winds will be west-southwest at 2-8 mph with easterly winds within the Treasure Valley and LC Valley. On Monday, these easterly winds expand into the Snake River Plain between Payette and Pocatello.

Smoke will continue to affect the Central Idaho Mountains the greatest today with regional smoke again tracking from the west-southwest. Generally active weather conditions with precipitation in southern Idaho will serve to limit long lasting smoke impacts with periods of haze and increased concentrations.  This evening, smoke from Canada looks to infiltrate into the Panhandle as far south as I-90 and into the low-lying valleys. This will clear tomorrow after the inversion lifts; around 11am. Saturday will see similar smoke conditions to today with drainage smoke on Saturday night entering the Upper Snake River Plain and tracking as far west as the Lower Treasure Valley. Because of the relatively stable conditions on Sunday, impacts will be greater in the areas surrounding Salmon once more with the diurnal drainage cycle again becoming the dominate pattern at night into Monday.
